College of the Environment - Everett & Western on the Peninsulas

Western Washington University’s College of the Environment offers degree programs in three different locations around the Puget Sound. Classes in our extension campuses are held evenings to accommodate working people.  Field labs are held on occasional weekends around the region.  Students can expect to complete a bachelor’s degree in 2 years with an eligible Associates’ in Arts - Direct Transfer Agreement (AA-DTA) from a regional community college.

Degrees

Our bachelor’s degrees use interdisciplinary approaches to focus on the human-environment interface.  We emphasize the socio-governance context which shapes the way the natural world is regarded and treated.  We train students in the skills, processes, and topics, of the earth sciences and natural sciences. A significant component of our degree is placement in professional internships at environmental agencies, labs, and organizations. Students gain the lens, practice, and temperament of an environmental professional by working alongside them.  Past students have worked in research programs, in municipal and tribal environmental management agencies, and science/toxicology labs.  They graduate with considerable hands-on experience.

The classroom experience knits together three campuses by using InterActive Television Conferencing to connect Everett, Port Angeles, and Poulsbo simultaneously. Many classes include an online component.

Ready to Apply?

It is highly recommended that you follow an Associate’s in Arts with Direct Transfer Agreement (AA-DTA) program in your community college. Advisors can help you take electives within the AA-DTA program to align with the prerequisites for your chosen major. This is the best route for all, including Environmental Science B.S.-bound, students to transfer into the WWU degree program with Junior class standing.

Completion of an AA-DTA fulfills WWU General University Requirements (GURs).  Lacking the AA-DTA, students often take additional time and more course load to be able to graduate.

Admission is only once per academic year, in the fall.

  1. Schedule a pre-advising session with the program manager to determine readiness for application.
  2. Make a formal application to Western Washington University through the Admissions Office online application process

Application deadline

Applications are considered on a rolling basis with a typical deadline (subject to change) of June 1 (for Fall admission only).

Measles (Rubeola) Immunity Requirement

Western has a commitment to the health and safety of all members of our campus community and has implemented a policy requiring proof of measles (rubeola) immunity for all new students and returning students who haven't yet met the requirement.

In addition to the Bellingham location, the College of the Environment allows you to pursue four-year degrees around the Puget Sound.
