Upon graduation, Urban and Environmental Planning and Policy undergraduate and graduate students will be able to:
Critically assess assumptions, implications, and applications of planning and policy frameworks.
Integrate concepts of equity, justice, and well-being to advance socio-environmental solutions.
Work collaboratively to identify environmental problems, engage diverse stakeholders, and generate solutions for just and sustainable futures.
Apply action research and community engagement methods to analyze data and assess proposals in real-world contexts.
Develop effective oral, written, and visual communication skills.

Urban Planning and Sustainable Development - Student Learning Outcomes
Upon graduation, UPSD majors will be able to:
- produce, interpret and apply research in a solution-‐oriented context;
- understand the legal, procedural, theoretical, ideological, and political processes that shape the urban environment;
- mediate the processes of conflict and collaboration among public and private stakeholders in urban planning;
- apply sustainable development methods to achieve greater balance in human and environmental interaction;
- demonstrate an ability to work in collaboratively and in situations involving uncertainty, diversity, and risk; and
- demonstrate effective design and communications skills in preparing plan proposals that improve urban life.
Urban Sustainability - Student Learning Outcomes
Upon graduation, Urban Sustainability majors will be able to:
- Examine cities and urban areas as complex physical and socio-economic systems that are integrated with the natural environment.
- Explain processes for decision-making, policy development and implementation of urban environmental solutions.
- Apply creative, real-world approaches to urban-environmental problems via effective communication.
- Apply knowledge and skills to effectively contribute to urban sustainability dialogue.
Environmental Policy - Student Learning Outcomes
Upon graduation, Environmental Policy majors will be able to:
- Explain historical context of environmental policies, i.e. legislation, regulations, and litigation, in the context of environmental problem-solving.
- Communicate stakeholders’ perspectives in environmental policy.
- Assess environmental governance efforts for their impacts on stakeholders, communities, and the environment.
- Apply knowledge and skills to effectively contribute to policy dialogue.
