An overview of the Salish Sea Environment and the work of the Salish Sea Institute

This talk will give an overview of the Salish Sea, it’s environmental significance and challenges. It will cover some of the obstacles in managing the Salish Sea as an international system and provide information about the work of the Salish Sea Institute at WWU. Ginny will set the stage for the winter quarter series that focuses on the Salish Sea and explain a bit about what’s to come and why.

Ginny Broadhurst started in June 2017 as the first Director of the Salish Sea Institute at WWU. In this role, she has managed the administration of the 2018 and 2020 Salish Sea Ecosystem Conferences, led the development of a multi-disciplinary minor in Salish Sea Studies at WWU, and managed the creation of a State of the Salish Sea report. From 2007 to 2017 she was the Executive Director of the Northwest Straits Commission where she connected local volunteers with funding for environmental restoration projects, managed a Puget Sound-wide derelict fishing net removal project and other marine recovery projects. Ginny has served on numerous regional and international advisory groups related to marine debris, ocean acidification, marine protected areas and coastal ecosystem health. Ginny has a BS in Environmental Conservation from University of New Hampshire and a Masters in Marine Affairs from University of Washington. She and her family live in Bellingham. 

Environmental Speaker Series

The Environmental Speaker Series is hosted by the College of the Environment at Western Washington University.

The Series is free and open to the public. Talks are held each Thursday at 4:30 pm in Academic Instructional Center West room 204 - AW-204. Talks will also be streamed via zoom. Register with the Alumni Association for the zoom link. Paid parking is available in lot C.
