Stephanie Sutherland Keyes Scholarship Application

This $3,000 scholarship will be provided to an indigenous*/native student, who possesses an interest in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, or Urban and Environmental Planning & Policy. The scholarship may be renewed for up to four years as long as the student remains in good academic standing and is making progress toward a College of the Environment pre-major or major.

*Indigenous is synonymous with Tribal Peoples, First Peoples and Native Peoples from around the globe and includes peoples from tribes not federally recognized by the United States Government.

Background

Stephanie Sutherland Keyes was an alumna of Western’s Campus School and double alumna of Western Washington University with both a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Mathematics. During her lifetime, Stephanie also developed a keen interest in native cultures and lifestyle as it impacts the soundness of the environment. She established an endowment to honor the traditional cultural practices of the native people of the Pacific Northwest.

It is the donor’s intent to provide scholarships for deserving indigenous*/native students who will be applying to, or are enrolled in, College of the Environment. Whenever possible, preference will be made to applicants who demonstrate the following, in descending order of priority:

• Interest in environmental topics related to one’s tribe or other native/indigenous communities
• Belong to an indigenous/native community
• Have a history of commitment to actively supporting, preserving, and advancing their community, environment, and culture survival
• Application will be open until May 9th, 2022 at 11:59pm, PT.
