College of the Environment Student Senators

Meet the 2024-25 College of the Environment Student Senators:
Megan Neufeld and Emma Fredlund

The AS Student Senate is made up of 21 elected WWU students. Senators represent the student body in matters of academic affairs such as department policies and curriculum design. We believe the most important role of the Senate is to provide a voice for students on issues that impact their experience at Western.

This year, we plan to hold an event that will foster community engagement within the college and with local Bellingham environmental non-profits. We also hope to assist in improving the pre-major advising process for 1st and 2nd years students. Both Senators serve on the Academic Honesty Board and CENV Policy Committee. Senator Fredlund is on the Senate Library committee and Senator Neufeld is on the Sustainability, Equity, Justice Fund committee.

Contact Megan and Emma at  as.cenv.senators@wwu.edu or drop by during office hours, listed below.

Megan Neufeld

Megan Neufeld

Major: Environmental Studies; emphasis in Policy, Politics, and Governance

Expected graduation date: Fall 2025

Hometown: Lyons, Colorado

Favorite CENV class: The Planet magazine!!!

Hobbies: I love to watch movies, play cribbage, mountain bike, and bake!

I chose environmental studies as my major because I believe policy is how we make change. Climate change and environmental issues are complicated and intersectional with other social issues. In order to chip away at these problems, I hope to modify and create policies that will make the world and our communities more resilient and equitable.

I decided to join the Student Senate because I wanted to utilize the discussions I’ve had with friends and classmates about how Western can be improved. Through student government, I am able to represent sentiments expressed by the student community and do what I can to have our voices heard and acted on.

Emma Fredlund

Monday & Wednesday 11:00-11:50 a.m.
ESCI 3rd Floor Lounge

Major: Environmental Science with a Marine Emphasis

Expected graduation date: Spring 26

Hometown: Bow, Washington

Favorite CENV classes: ESCI 393, Coastal Seas and Climate Change and SALI 390.

Hobbies: In my free time I swim (WWU Swim Club!) and spend a lot of time out on the water, whether that’s paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, etc.

I chose environmental science because I have always wanted to do field research, specifically for DNR or Fish and Wildlife. I grew up in an outside oriented family and have felt a connection to environmental sciences since a young age.

I decided to join the student senate because I wanted to connect with students about academic opportunities in the college, as well as bridge the gap between the academic community and overall student life.
